Baltimore Leadership School for Young Black Women (BLSYW) School Transformation
Project Overview
Ground Zero Studio partnered with Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW) to transform multiple interior spaces throughout the school, including stairwells and hallway environments, into vibrant, engaging spaces that celebrate learning, creativity, and school pride.
Through custom illustrations, motivational messaging, and student-informed design, the project reimagined previously blank walls as opportunities to inspire students, reinforce school culture, and create a more welcoming educational environment.
The Challenge
Prior to the project, many of the school's stairwells and hallways lacked visual identity and engagement. Staff members frequently described the environment as feeling institutional, with little color, energy, or visual connection to the students who occupied the space each day.
School leadership wanted to create an environment that felt more uplifting and reflective of the school's values while encouraging student motivation, belonging, and pride. The challenge was to introduce vibrant visual storytelling without overwhelming the space or creating an environment that felt overly branded.
Discovery and Engagement
The design process began through collaboration with school leadership to better understand the culture, goals, and vision for the student experience.
To ensure the artwork reflected the voices of the students, surveys and creative worksheets were distributed throughout the school. Students shared feedback on colors, themes, imagery, and ideas they felt would best represent their school community.
This input became an important source of inspiration throughout the creative process, helping Ground Zero Studio develop artwork that felt authentic to the students while supporting the school's broader educational mission.
Creative Development
Using insights gathered from both leadership and students, Ground Zero Studio developed a series of original illustrations and environmental graphics tailored specifically to the school.
Each floor was designed around themes intended to encourage curiosity, confidence, growth, and achievement. Visual elements included books, butterflies, flowers, stars, word searches, inspirational messaging, and illustrations that encouraged students to dream big and pursue their goals.
While incorporating the school's orange and purple brand colors, the artwork extended beyond traditional school branding to create a unique visual experience that felt playful, educational, and inspiring.
All illustrations were custom-designed and developed digitally before being translated into large-scale installations throughout the building.
Installation & Execution
The project spanned multiple floors, stairwells, and hallway environments, requiring careful planning and coordination to work within an active school setting.
Installation involved a combination of ladders, scaffolding, and large-scale mural production techniques to reach challenging spaces throughout the building. Despite the complexity of the environment, the artwork was designed to remain visually cohesive while creating distinct experiences throughout each area of the school.
To further strengthen student ownership of the project, community paint days were incorporated into the process, allowing eighth-grade students to participate in the creation of the murals and contribute directly to the transformation of their school.

Community Impact
The impact of the project was immediate and visible throughout the school community. As students returned each day, they were able to witness the progress of the artwork and watch their environment evolve in real time.
Beyond creating a more vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, the project fostered a stronger sense of ownership among students. Staff members noted that students were less likely to write on or damage the walls because they felt personally connected to the artwork and proud of the role they played in creating it.
Today, the transformed hallways and stairwells serve as daily reminders of creativity, achievement, and possibility while reinforcing a positive culture throughout the school.
